This weekend there is an event in Philadelphia geared towards educating and discussing the realities of Peak Oil, energy depletion, alternative energies, community solutions, and the politics involved. Its open to the public, $20 will get you in for whatever seminars you’d like to attend. If anyone ends up going, email me (dissectional@comcast.net) if you’d like…I will be there and would love to meet up with anyone who’s interested.

Man, good for Philly. Somebody had to step up. Please keep us posted on anything noteworthy, Luke.

Heh.
Well, expect a report sometime soon…it was interesting for sure. Some of the people involved in this ‘movement’ are fucking delusional, though.

By delusional, do you mean, more worked up about peak oil than we are?

I look forward to your “delusional” report. Awesome.

No, by delusional I mean that some of the people that I heard speak are a bit too idealistic for my taste.

Ah, I see now. Well, think about it - unhappiness doesn’t sell. They needed to give this peak oil thing a positive spin because most people are turning a blind eye to the issue. It’s impossible to take Mr. Middle Aged SUV Driver and get him to think about this stuff. He’s still waiting for gas to go back down to 37 cents a gallon!
There’s a lot of doom and gloom associated with peak oil - that isn’t open to debate. But to get people to open up their minds to HUGE culture change as the earth’s oil wells dry up, you have to start off slowly and gently.

Yea but I don’t see that as justification for saying things that aren’t true, like talking up wind and solar power like they are the savior of the human race and totally shitting on nuclear. I’m no proponent of nuclear on a massive scale, but I’m not stupid enough to say that it shouldn’t be used.

Many “traditional” environmentalists are anti-nuclear, but I’m with ya. It’s much safer now and compared to coal (*cough* *wheeze*) I’ve gotta say it’s a lot better. At least we can contain that waste rather than ejecting it into the air. No, it ain’t perfect, but if walking away from coal means we have to increase the number of nuclear reactors for the time being, I’m on board.
