In February of this year, Philadelphia lost their only modern rock/alternative radio station, Y100. This station was switched from its alternative format to hip-hop, much to the fury of the former Y100 listeners. In fact, the fans and some of the DJs took Y100 underground at y100rocks.com, which can be heard through iTunes Radio or through their website.
This past week, WYSP switched their format from rock to talk, which leaves Philly with only one rock station, WMMR. According to what I’ve been hearing and reading, they say that many of the Infinity stations will be switching formats because Howard Stern is going to satellite radio. The main area affected by this decision is the New York City metropolitan area, where KROCK will be switching to a full talk format from their rock format on the day Howard Stern leaves, January 3rd. As a result, New York will be without a rock ‘n roll station of any kind.
These events raise many questions. Is traditional radio feeling the effects of the iPod and satellite radio stations on the music market? Is rock ‘n roll slowly transitioning out of pop culture, like what occurred with other styles of music? Or is this just media corporations trying to increase profits by swarming a hot genre of music to the abandonment of other, possibly less competitive genres?
Personally, I’ve listened less and less to radio ever since Y100 went off the air. My iPod quickly filled its place in my listening habits. Two of my good friends now subscribe to Sirius Radio. I know many others who listen to music via the internet. Can radio compete with this?
I don’t think rock is dead when you have great music being released by Audioslave, Foo Fighters, Green Day, and U2.

I am disappointed, yet apathetic simultaneously…if that is possible. Personally, I rarely listen to the radio because I guess I am at the age where I know what I like, so I just make CDs (eventually I’ll get an iPod, but in social situations I don’t need one because EVERYONE has one) also, the rock stations still play music that annoys me to no end, so I usually avoid it. Finally, there are always commercials when I need to hear some music, so I get fed up. However, no rock at all? I know there are people out there that need to be inspired and influenced by new rock, or even the classics…but none at all? I find it very disturbing. The pop music of today is empty nonsense, and hip-hop (while having a few shining stars) is full of terrible imagery and suggestions. I swear there is a cultural, spiritual, and political assault on the nation’s youth, to turn them into more loyal and obedient slaves to the machine before they reach the age of reason.
I am confident, however, that someone will step up and fill the niche.

Satellite radio is the way to go. The only reason I ever listen to terrestrial radio is for Preston & Steve’s morning show in Philadelphia. Otherwise, it is all Sirius all the time. I can listen to the same station wether at home or in Upstate Boondocks New York, my winter retreat. Terrestrial radio is DEAD.

Good riddance.
Its not dead, but its surely dying. I think an FM station that played music that was actually worth listening to would still do well, especially in the Philly area where there hasn’t been a good rock radio station for years. Massive personal mp3 players have pretty much given people a radio station in their pocket. The rise of sattellite is only going to hasten FM’s demise.

The only thing I hope they can resolve is the loss of signal due to occlusions from obstacles. It’s annoying to lose music under an overpass or in a tunnel, and I can’t imagine them ever being able to sell portable units that people could wear in a subway.

If you like rock n’ roll you should come to northern NH. You’ll think you’ve entered a time warp. Nothing but 70’s rock n’ roll 24/7 It’s creepy.
I would check music genre sales figures for your area. It may only be a reflection of market forces.

Rock and roll is not dead. Mainstream rock just basically sucks except for a few bands. You can still get good rock by going on line and looking up bands. You’ve probably heard of indie music. There are some good indie bands and some that suck. You have to be patient and find the kind of indie bands that you like. Some are border line rock, others are folk, and some are electronic. Radio stations are crappy now because of clearchannel. Everything is done for a profit instead of for the music. Often the best radio stations are campus stations that play music because they feel like it and not because of economic pressure. You have to beyond mtv to find good music, but it is certainly not dead.
